The Ontario government has been working to help the horse racing industry find a way forward, with a plan to ensure sustainability of the industry and sufficient funds for transition.

In May 2013, the Minister of Agriculture and Food asked the Horse Racing Industry Transition Panel (the Panel) to bring forward a concrete plan for a sustainable horse racing industry including recommendations on:

  • growing the fan base and enhancing wagering revenues
  • improving the governance and regulation of the horse racing industry
  • developing a sustainable funding model, and
  • promoting excellence in racehorse management and breeding

The Panel has also been tasked to work closely with the Ministry of Finance and OLG to integrate horse racing into Ontario’s broader gaming strategy.
The Panel’s draft plan for consultation: Toward a Sustainable Future – a Plan for Horse Racing in Ontario, has now been released and is available in both French and English at http://www.ontario.ca/horseracingtransition. Written suggestions on how the draft plan can be improved are invited.
Input from stakeholder and the public is also being encouraged through four public meetings. Webex /teleconferencing will be available to allow remote participation.

  • July 8 – Western Fair District Raceway, 1-4 pm
  • July 9 – Woodbine Racetrack, 1 – 4 pm
  • July 10 – Ajax Downs, 1 – 4 pm
  • July 11 – Rideau Carleton Raceway, 1 – 4 pm (services available in both French and English)

To assist with meeting logistics, please register for a session at least 2 days in advance, indicating whether you will be participating in person or remotely, by:

  • calling the Agricultural Information Contact Centre at 1-877-424-1300,
  • e-mailing horseracingtransition@ontario.ca, or
  • registering online by clicking here

Suggestions received will help to shape and strengthen the final plan which the Panel will release in October 2013.
Sincerely,
Gwen McBride
