Horses of all status, breeds and classes are a common sight on grassy slopes or along country roads within King. The Township of King’s rolling hills provide the environment required to raise horses that have gained distinction around the world.
King is located in one of the most active equestrian areas in the World.
The township is known both for its Olympic-calibre athletes – both riders and horses. This world-class stature is a significant factor in York Region’s status of having the largest number of horses per acre in Ontario. The 2008 Olypmics in Beijing drew attention to the Canadian Equestrian team and publicity for the Township of King. Eric Lamaze, resident of Schomberg and operator of Torrey Pines Stables in Schomberg, won gold in the individual jumping event and the Canadian Team of Eric Lamaze, Mac Cone, Ian Miller and Jill Henselwood, won silver in the team jumping event. Mac Cone is also a King resident living in King City.
The township’s residents include a multitude of Olympic-level and FEI level riders, allowing King to boast one of the world’s highest concentrations of Olympians Per Capita. While the township holds a high concentration of elite athletes, there are endless opportunities for individuals of all levels, including beginners, equine tourists, and service providers. The industry generates a wide range of related business and employment opportunities: veterinarians, groomers, property and facility staff, transportation services, manufacturers of related accessories and equipment, and feed suppliers. There is also a tertiary level created in the hospitality sector, to meet the needs of guests and tourists coming into the area for equestrian events.
King has become an attractive location for anyone with a special interest in horses or for breeders wishing to establish a new farm or expand an already existing operation.
